Step 1: Choose the right herbs

Make sure that you choose herbs that are safe for your hens. Do your research and stay away from herbs that can harm your chickens.

Most of the herbs have multiple beneficial properties for your hens. Here is a list of my 9 favorite herbs that I use in my nesting boxes:

  1. lavender
  2. peppermint
  3. chamomile
  4. rosemary
  5. calendula (marigolds)
  6. fennel seed
  7. parsley
  8. marjoram
  9. dandelion leaf

Step 2: Dry the herbs

  • Choose which herbs you would like to use in your chicken nesting boxes.
  • You will want to make sure that you thoroughly dry the herbs (to prevent molding).
  • Take them to a cool, dry place and hang them upside down.
  • The drying process can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
  • Outdoor weather conditions, such as high humidity or rain, can cause the drying time to take longer.
  • Hot and dry conditions can speed up the drying time.

Step 3: Prepare the nesting boxes

  1. Clean the nesting boxes. Make sure they don’t have any chicken poop or broken egg shells inside. I like to sanitize mine with an ACV/water spray.
  2. Add the nesting material of your choice. My hens really like pine shavings.
  3. Sprinkle 1 TBS of dried herbs into each nesting box.
  4. This will create a comfortable and aromatic bed for your chickens.

Step 4: Replace the herbs regularly

  1. I find that the herbs lose their potency within a week. So I replace them every week.
  2. Remove the nesting material and the old herbs weekly from the nesting boxes and replace them with fresh ones.
  3. If your hens soiled the nesting boxes, clean and replenish with fresh nesting material and herbs.
  4. By doing this, your chickens will continuously benefit from the herbal properties.
